Jump Scare: Rollie has a latex movie monster set up to leap at his door while a recording of the monster's roar is played, whenever somebody comes in.It turns out to be a double bluff where Rollie is framed for the death of DeFranco, but he was indeed only Faking The Dead. Faking the Dead: The professed intent of Rollie's first job is to do this for DeFranco being put into witness protection.Rollie jumping in to deactivate it, to the film crew's annoyance. It gets further compounded when the "Quarter million dollar" animatronic prop used for the alien cyborg runs amok and threatens the safety of the gathered audience.
Ending in failure when the effects technician's explosion doesn't go off when it's supposed to. For the second, a sci-fi alien movie inspired by The Terminator featuring an alien cyborg Disguised in Drag is being filmed.The scene is performed successfully thanks to Rollie's work. In the first movie, it's a crime thriller involving a mysterious trenchcoated man shooting up a fancy restaurant.Fake Action Prologue: Both movies open up with a shooting of a film.Decoy Protagonist: In the first film Ellen seems like a typical love interest and a sidekick, but is shot by a sniper 30 minutes in.At the end, he touches an electrified gate. He worries that the transceiver used to trigger the blood-packs will interfere with it. Chekhov's Gun: DeFranco's pacemaker in the first one.Leo's actor Brian Dennehy had played the Big Bad of the first film. Celebrity Paradox: The Rambo films exists in the film's universe, evidenced by the poster for the second film in Rollie's apartment.Turns out that two pay phones have been taped together earpiece-to-mouthpiece so tracing the call wouldn't work. The Calls Are Coming from Inside the House: A phone call is traced to the lobby of the same government building where the call is being taken.Screenwriter Bill Condon later went on to direct Gods and Monsters. Some of the time, Rollie just uses MacGyver-type ingenuity to trick the bad guys instead of relying on special effects, but even these scenes are pretty cool (like when he puts hot dogs in a tennis ball machine to lure some guard dogs away). Rollie also uses a remote controlled clown not only to beat up an assailant, but to pilot a helicopter too! There’s also a funny part involving a walkie-talkie hidden in a pair of fake boobs. Rollie causes an aisle of baked beans to explode on the bad guy and beats him with frozen turkeys in the deli department. The scene set at a supermarket is the highlight. Director Richard (Psycho 2) Franklin delivers the goods and the action sequences are frequently amusing. The special effects trickery is also more elaborate and goofy this time around. O’Connor, and Joanna Gleason offer solid support. They are once again pretty awesome, and Rachel Ticotin, Kevin J. Whereas the first film had Dennehy on the hunt for Brown, this one plays almost like a Buddy Movie at times. That’s mostly because Bryan Brown and Brian Dennehy actually get to share some screen time this time out. If you can’t already tell, the plot is kind of all over the place, and (like the original) it runs on a bit too long, but F/X 2: The Deadly Art of Illusion is always entertaining. He eventually calls on his old buddy Leo (Brian Dennehy) and the two of them wind up uncovering a scheme involving dirty cops, mobsters, priceless medallions, and even The Vatican! Naturally, things go sour, the cop winds up dead, and Rollie has to find the guys responsible. Her cop ex-husband hires him to create some effects to help him nab a peeping tom. Rollie Tyler (Bryan Brown) is out of the special effects game and dating a hot single mom (Rachel Ticotin). Unlike Breakin’ 2 or Highlander 2, F/X 2 happens to be even better than the original.
It ranks right up there with Electric Boogalo and The Quickening. For my money, The Deadly Art of Illusion is one of the three best sequel subtitles of all-time.
